Erythrolosamine is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosome, preventing protein synthesis. It has potent antibacterial activity and can be used for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria with a C1-C3 carbon chain. Erythrolosamine is demethylated by propionyl coenzyme A carboxylase to form erythromycin, its active form. This antibiotic binds to the ribosomal subunit and prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
Erythrolosamine also inhibits elastase which may be helpful in treating inflammatory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
