2-Phenylglycinonitrile hydrochloride is a reaction product of triethylamine and 2-phenylglycinonitrile. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of various medicines. 2-Phenylglycinonitrile hydrochloride reacts with hydrochloric acid to form 2-phenylglycinol, which is then reacted with methanol and hydroxyl group to produce an acetonitrile derivative. The final step in the synthesis involves catalytic reduction of the nitrile function with hydrogen and a catalyst such as platinum oxide or palladium black. 2-Phenylglycinonitrile hydrochloride can be used as a medicine for lowering blood pressure.
