Onitin is a pharmaceutical preparation that has been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of various infectious diseases. It is an extract from the plant Angelica Dahurica (Chinese Angelica) and has been shown to have protease activity. Onitin has also been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth and stimulate the immune system by producing cytokines such as IL-2, IFN-γ, and TNF-α.
The active ingredient of onitin is protocatechuic acid, which inhibits bacterial protease activity. This inhibition causes a decrease in bacterial growth and proliferation, leading to reduced infection rates in mice with sepsis. Onitin also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit COX enzymes. These effects are similar to those seen with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
