Sarmazenil is a benzodiazepine antagonist that competes with the binding of benzodiazepines to the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor. It has been shown to have antidepressant effects in animals, and may be useful for treating depression by preventing the enhancement of GABA-mediated neurotransmission. Sarmazenil is also used to reverse the sedative effects of benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, and can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. This drug binds to receptors at the occipital cortex, leading to an increase in cortisol concentration. Sarmazenil has a high affinity for GABA receptors and acts as a competitive inhibitor of other ligands that bind these receptors. It is structurally similar to diazepam and has been shown to reverse its depressant effect on locomotor activity in rats.
