3,5-Dimethoxystilbene is a potent inhibitor of human pathogens. It has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential in vitro and show antimicrobial effects against human pathogens such as Cryptococcus neoformans. 3,5-Dimethoxystilbene also inhibits fatty acid production in liver cells and leukemia cells. The structure of 3,5-dimethoxystilbene includes a stilbene core with two methoxy groups at the 5 and 3 position on the ring, respectively. This compound is related to other stilbenes that have been shown to have antimicrobial properties such as resveratrol from grapes and pterostilbene from blueberries.
