- (+)-Axillaridine A
Axillaridine A is a phytochemical that has been shown to inhibit the activity of aromatase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of estrogens. The structure and mode of action of Axillaridine A have been elucidated through molecular modeling and site-directed mutagenesis studies. Axillaridine A binds to the active site residues in the enzyme's cavity and interacts with tamoxifen, a drug used to treat breast cancer. Axillaridine A also inhibits the production of matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that degrade collagen, leading to neuronal death. It is currently unknown how axillaridine A exerts its antiestrogenic effects or why it is not active against all estrogen receptors.
