Butyrolactone 3 is an insoluble research molecule with the empirical formula C8H14O2. It is a sulfur-containing compound that can be polymerized to form polymers. Butyrolactone 3 has been used as a polymerization initiator for nitro-olefin systems, and has been shown to be an efficient alicyclic sulfide monomer in lithography. This molecule can also be used as a precursor in asymmetric synthesis, where it has been shown to undergo optical rotation. The butyrolactone 3 moiety can also serve as a precursor for the synthesis of acetaldehyde or hydrocarbons.
