Karenitecin is a diagnostic agent with minimal toxicity. It is used to detect granulosa cells in human serum and is also an immunohistochemical marker for the diagnosis of gliomas. Karenitecin binds to α1-acid glycoprotein, which is found at high levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, and has been shown to have potent antitumor activity. The drug can be administered intravenously or intra-arterially, with a low risk of toxicity. Karenitecin has been shown to have antineoplastic properties by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be due to its ability to bind to the a-ring of ATP synthase.
