It has been shown to be effective in treating cholestatic liver diseases, such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, by reducing the synthesis of bile acids. Methyl 5-cyclopropyl-3-(2-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)isoxazole-4-carboxylate is an isoxazole derivative that acts on the human liver and other tissues by inhibiting bile acid synthesis at the level of 7α hydroxylase.
