Santamarine is a Chinese herb that contains a mixture of sesquiterpene lactones. It has been used for the treatment of various inflammatory bowel diseases, and has shown to have anti-cancer properties. Santamarine inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and lipoxygenase. Santamarine has also been found to have a protective effect on mitochondrial membrane potential, which is essential for cell function and survival.
