N-Ethylnicotinamide is a nicotinic acid amide that is used to determine the concentration of ethyl esters in urine samples. It has been shown to be useful for determining the level of nicotinic acid in blood and other tissues with high nicotinamide concentrations, such as the papillary muscle. N-Ethylnicotinamide is also an inotropic agent that increases heart rate and force of contraction. This agent binds to cardiac myofilaments, which results in increased intracellular calcium levels, leading to increased contractility. Chromatographic analysis of this compound has revealed three forms: 2-ethylnicotinamide, 3-ethylnicotinamide, and 4-ethylnicotinamide. Hydrochloric acid can be used to convert these three forms into one form, which can then be analyzed by GCMS.
