Bakuchicin is a plant-derived molecule that inhibits the activity of topoisomerase II, which is an enzyme involved in DNA replication. Bakuchicin has shown antiviral properties in vitro and in vivo against human viruses, such as hepatitis B virus (HBV), by inhibiting viral RNA replication. Bakuchicin also affects the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and has been shown to have antidepressant effects in mice. The mechanism of action of bakuchicin is not yet fully understood; however, it may be due to its inhibition of topoisomerase II, leading to dna replication inhibition and subsequent depression in mice.
