1,4:3,6-Dianhydro-α-D-glucopyranose is a crystalline compound that is soluble in water. It has a chemical formula of C12H24O11 and a molecular weight of 360.36 g/mol. The molecule is composed of three anhydrosugar rings, each with six carbon atoms, that are linked together by glycosidic bonds. The anhydrosugar rings are connected to one another in a head-to-tail fashion and form the open chain structure of cellulose. Crystals of 1,4:3,6-Dianhydro-α-D-glucopyranose have been obtained by x-ray crystallographic analysis and pyrolysis techniques.
The crystal structure shows that the three anhydrosugar rings are located on different planes and form the open chain structure of cellulose.
