2-Bromoethyl Methacrylate (BEEM) is an organic monomer that is used in the production of acrylic adhesives, paints and coatings. BEEM is synthesized by reacting trifluoroacetic acid with methacrylic acid. The polymerization initiator, azobisisobutyronitrile, is then added to initiate the esterification reaction and a copolymerization reaction with acrylonitrile. This leads to the formation of BEEM and other methacrylates. 2-Bromoethyl Methacrylate can be used as an antibacterial agent because it has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro. This may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis or methyl esterification due to its presence in the cell membrane.
