Description:
Meso-butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid is a crystalline solid that has a phase transition temperature of about -30°C. It is an ester with four carboxylic acid groups and four hydrocarbons. The salt is prepared by the reaction of sodium hydroxide and meso-butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid in water solution. In the presence of collagen gel and x-ray crystal structures, it polymerizes to form a three dimensional network of crosslinked polymeric chains. Meso-butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid has been shown to have absorbent properties when mixed with water vapor or oxide. It can also be used as a hydrogen bonding interaction inhibitor in the synthesis of zirconium oxide.
