Description:
Farnesol is a natural compound that belongs to the group of polymyxins. It is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the cell membrane, which disrupts the cell's permeability and blocks the cell's ability to take in nutrients. Farnesol has been shown to be effective against albicans, wild-type strains of erythromycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and squamous carcinoma cells in vitro. The way it works is not yet well understood; however, it has been suggested that farnesol may inhibit toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation and nuclear DNA synthesis.
