1,2-Bis(methanesulfonyloxy)ethane (MSDE) is a chemical compound that has been shown to induce apoptosis in cells. It binds to the androgen receptor and induces the production of reactive oxygen species, leading to DNA damage and cell death. MSDE has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in seminiferous tubules. This inhibition is thought to be due to its ability to cause DNA damage and cell death in cells that are located at the site of synthesis for proteins necessary for sperm production. MSDE also inhibits cyclin D2 production in testicular cells, which may be due to its ability to bind with sulfonate groups on the protein or by inhibiting the activity of methionine adenosyltransferase II (MATII), an enzyme involved in polyamine biosynthesis.
