Its sequence data has been determined and it has been acetoxylated. 3MC is a chemoenzymatic product that can be synthesized by the oxidation of cyclopentenone with nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide. 3MCs have been shown to be markers for necrosis factor, mononuclear cells, and irradiation. Studies have shown that 3MCs are responsible for production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).
