Description:

1-Chlorohexadecane is a cationic surfactant that is used in the biological treatment of wastewater. It is made by reacting chloride with 1-chlorohexadecanethiol, which has been shown to be effective in preventing the deterioration of membrane function and enzyme substrates. 1-Chlorohexadecane has a high reactivity with fatty acids, which leads to the formation of reaction products that can be analyzed using a mass spectrometer. The optimum concentration for this surfactant is 0.25% by weight, while methyl pentanoate (a fatty acid) has an optimum concentration of 4%. 1-Chlorohexadecane also helps to increase viscosity in water and fatty acids are involved in cellular function.
