Anthracene-9,10-diol is a type of polycarboxylic acid that has been extensively studied for its potential to cause lung damage. It is a redox compound with a potential of +1.8 volts, which can be reduced by the addition of hydrogen. Anthracene-9,10-diol reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce methides and p-coumaryl alcohol in methanol solvent. This reaction was shown to be reversible by the addition of an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene or naphthalene. The kinetic data for this reaction have been determined using chromatographic methods. Anthracene-9,10-diol also has the ability to reduce diazonium salt and form nucleophilic addition products with hydroxyl groups on organic compounds such as acetaldehyde or 3-(3'-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC).
