It has the molecular weight of 132.17 g/mol and a density of 0.965 g/mL at 25°C. The melting point for this compound is -78°C and it has a boiling point of 164°F (73°C). Ethyl 2-methyl-3-oxohexanoate has been found to have high levels in Delphinium species, which are plants that contain alkaloids such as methyllycaconitine, which are analogues to the more well known morphine. This ester can be synthesized from the reaction between ethyl acetate and benzaldehyde.
