The nitro group on the phenolic ring is highly reactive and can react with biological molecules containing thiol groups or amine groups. Biochemical studies have shown that this reaction causes an increase in the levels of unsaturated alkyl radicals and lipid peroxidation products in cells. 4-(2-Nitroanilino)phenol has also been shown to be toxic in acute toxicity studies.
