Product Information
Steffimycin B is a triazine derivative that was first isolated from the endophytic fungus Streptomyces sp. K88. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human pathogens, including Mycobacterium avium and other mycobacteria, by inhibiting the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. The mechanism of action has been determined to be through carbonyl reduction, which inhibits the formation of amino sugars needed for cell wall biosynthesis. Steffimycin B also reduces the levels of growth factors in cells that are necessary for cancer cell proliferation and differentiation. Studies have shown that steffimycin B binds to drugs such as vincristine and paclitaxel with high affinity, thereby reducing their effectiveness. Steffimycin B has also been shown to inhibit the binding of these drugs to their target molecules by means of competition with aldehyde groups on its structure.
