Product Information
- 5,8-Dihydroxy-2-(1-hydroxy-4-methylpent-3-enyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione
Shikonin is a natural product that has antioxidant activity. It is extracted from the root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon and has been used as a dye for plants, foods, and textiles. Shikonin has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties in cell culture studies. It also inhibits the production of growth factors by metal hydroxides, such as usnic acid, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the generation of reactive oxygen species. Shikonin can be synthesized using asymmetric synthesis with hydrochloric acid as an oxidant. This synthesis produces (+)-shikonin and (-)-shikonin in a ratio of 1:1.
