1-(2-Ethynylphenyl)ethan-1-one (1EPE) is a synthetic intermediate that is used in organic chemistry. It has two mechanisms, as an intramolecular diazonium salt or as a pyrylium ion. 1EPE can be synthesized from the reaction of ethyl acetoacetate with nitrobenzene and sodium hydroxide. It can also be produced by the displacement of 2,4-dinitrophenol with diethyl malonate, which produces diethyl malonic acid and 1EPE. The synthesis of 1EPE is important for the production of polycyclic aromatic compounds.
