4-Nitrophenyl β-D-ribofuranoside is a synthetic chromogenic molecule designed to profile phosphorolytic enzyme activity, specifically ribonucleoside-hydrolyzing enzymes. Upon hydrolysis by these enzymes, it releases a 4-nitrophenolic compound, which can be monitored spectrophotometrically at 405-410 nm as a quantitative indicator of enzyme activity.
