The secreted phospholipase A2-IIA (sPLA2-IIA) is a proinflammatory enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of glycerophospholipids at the sn-2 position. This enzyme is expressed by neutrophils, macrophages, and other cell types. It is also found in lipocalin and can be secreted into the extracellular environment. sPLA2-IIA has been shown to have oncogenic properties in cells transfected with an oncogene, which may be due to its ability to promote arachidonic acid release from membrane phospholipids and to induce synthesis of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
