5-Amino-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzonitrile (5-ATB) is a potent anticancer agent that induces apoptosis in human leukemia cells. It has cytostatic and cytotoxic effects on the cancerous cells, which are mediated by its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis. 5-ATB inhibits the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which is required for DNA synthesis, and also causes DNA fragmentation. The antitumor activity of 5-ATB is due to its ability to induce apoptosis in leukemia cells. In addition, 5-ATB has been shown to be effective against breast cancer cells as well as other types of cancer cells.
