2-Aminobenzonitrile is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5CN. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and polar solvents. 2-Aminobenzonitrile can be synthesized by the reaction of ethylene diamine with phosphorus pentoxide, which yields 2-aminobenzonitrile and hydrogen cyanide as products. The uv absorption spectrum of 2-aminobenzonitrile exhibits maxima at 220 nm and 240 nm, indicating the presence of a cyano group. This cyano group reacts with malonic acid to form a Schiff base, which can then react with hydrogen to produce an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the two amine groups. Hydrogen chloride or trifluoroacetic acid can be used to deprotonate the amine groups on either side of the Schiff base, resulting in cleavage of the hydrogen bond and formation of benzene rings on each
