This cyano group reacts with malonic acid to form a Schiff base, which can then react with hydrogen to produce an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the two amine groups. Hydrogen chloride or trifluoroacetic acid can be used to deprotonate the amine groups on either side of the Schiff base, resulting in cleavage of the hydrogen bond and formation of benzene rings on each
