5-Aminoindane is a synthetic drug used as a potent inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) that is involved in the metabolism of tryptophan. 5-Aminoindane has been shown to inhibit the production of nitric oxide in animal models for pain. It also has affinity constants for amines and quinoline derivatives, which are drugs used to control bacterial infections. 5-Aminoindane is structurally similar to triazines, which are agricultural fungicides and herbicides. 5-Aminoindane may be synthesized by sulfonation of an all-trans retinoic acid followed by addition of one or more amines and quinoline derivatives.
