4-Amino-2-methylpyridine is a metabolite of anilines and has been shown to be genotoxic. 4-Amino-2-methylpyridine is a basic compound that reacts with nucleophilic groups on proteins and DNA, forming covalent adducts. The reaction between the amine group and protonated DNA bases or amino groups on proteins may lead to the formation of adducts that interfere with DNA replication or protein synthesis. 4-Amino-2-methylpyridine also inhibits growth in organisms such as Streptococcus faecalis, which can cause diseases such as endocarditis.
