3-Aminobenzoic acid is a cyclic peptide that has been shown to inhibit nitrite ion formation in the human body. Nitrite ions are produced from nitric oxide and bind to hemoglobin, forming methemoglobin. 3-Aminobenzoic acid does not have a direct effect on nitric oxide, but it inhibits the conversion of nitrite ions to nitrate ions by reacting with the hemoglobin in blood. This prevents methemoglobin from being formed and reduces the risk of oxygen deprivation. 3-Aminobenzoic acid is synthesized by humans in response to an infection or other injury and can be found in human serum. The crystal structures of 3-aminobenzoic acid were determined by x-ray crystallography methods, which showed that this molecule forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules. These interactions stabilize its structure and allow for intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between its amino acids. The reaction mechanism was determined by kinetic energy
