Acetohydroxamic acid is a biocompatible polymer with a coordination geometry that allows it to bind to the active form of antibiotics. This compound has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity in vitro and in vivo, as well as antimicrobial activity against antibiotic-resistant strains. Acetohydroxamic acid binds to the acetohydroxamate form of an antibiotic, preventing it from binding to the target molecule (e.g., ribosome) and inhibiting its activity. Acetohydroxamic acid also chelates metal ions that are found in many antibiotics and can be used in conjunction with other ligands such as EDTA to inhibit their activity.
