Description:Vasopressin is a hormone that is released from the posterior pituitary gland and stimulates the release of water from the kidneys. Vasopressin binds to receptors in the kidney tubules and increases water permeability and urine volume. Vasopressin also has been shown to be effective in reducing sensitivity to ionizing radiation, which may be due to its ability to bind with sulfur-containing amino acids such as cysteine and glutathione. The radiolabeled form of vasopressin is used as a tracer for measuring lung function, including volumes of air flow, gas density, and gas volume.
