Adipoyl chloride is a reactive compound that can undergo redox reactions. The reductive half-reaction is:
R-CH=C(O)Cl + H+ → R-CHO + Cl-
In this reaction, the electron from the hydrogen atom on the left is transferred to the carbon in the hydrocarbon group on the right, which becomes negatively charged. In addition, adipoyl chloride has ester linkages that are stable to hydrolysis and are resistant to chemical degradation. This property makes it useful for preparing polyesters or polyurethanes. Adipoyl chloride also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. The mechanism of this inhibition is not clear, but may be due to its ability to react with a variety of biological molecules such as proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Adipoyl chloride reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form 2-fluoroethanol and p-
