2-Amino-6-chlorophenol is an antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of staphylococcus and other bacteria by damaging their DNA. It is a synthetic chemical with carcinogenic properties that can be used in the production of diphosgene, a potent chemical weapon. 2-Amino-6-chlorophenol has been shown to inhibit tumorigenicity in mice, but it is not clear whether the compound causes cancer in humans. The compound has also been found to have anti-fungal properties. 2-Amino-6-chlorophenol reacts with pyridine to form a red or purple dye that can be used as an indicator for recrystallization of organic compounds.
