2-Amino-5-chloropyrimidine is an organic compound that belongs to the family of pyrrole derivatives. It has been shown to react with orotic acid, which is a precursor in the synthesis of pyrimidines, and inactivates it by forming urea. 2-Amino-5-chloropyrimidine also reacts with anions such as perchlorate and thiocyanate and forms a tautomeric form. The tautomeric form is inactive because it cannot bind to the nitrogen atoms on the ring.
2-Amino-5-chloropyrimidine is also able to bind to purine nucleobases such as guanine through hydrogen bonds and form a constant structure that can be seen in x-ray crystallography studies.
