5-Carboxycytosine is a glycosylase that catalyses the removal of a sugar molecule from 5-carboxymethylaminomethyluracil (5-CMAM) to form 5-carboxymethylaminomethyluracil (5-CMA), which is not found in mammalian cells. The enzyme is a member of the family of glycosylases, which use hydrogen bonds to cleave the carbon-oxygen bond. It has been shown to be involved in transcriptional regulation and DNA repair. 5-Carboxycytosine has also been used as an analytical reagent for determining the presence of 5-CMAM in DNA samples.
5-Carboxycytosine has been shown to induce cellular transformation, which may be due to its ability to bind dna with high affinity and act as a template for dna synthesis. It is also able to produce 5-C
