The acetyl group is transferred to a carbanion, which is then oxidized to form a disulphide. This process can also be used for synthesizing other organic compounds, such as methyl ketones and x-ray crystallography. 2-Acetylphenanthrene has also been used in solvents and copolymerization reactions.
