Alisol A is a natural compound that binds to the ATP-binding cassette transporter protein and inhibits the transport of alisol. Alisol A has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human liver cancer cells in vitro, with no toxicity against normal liver cells. This compound also inhibits the growth of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) by interfering with their ability to produce proteins necessary for viral replication. Alisol A also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to induce autophagy. Alisol A is metabolized by rat liver microsomes, but not by human liver microsomes, suggesting that it may cause adverse effects in humans.
