Description:Allopurinol is a drug that is used in the treatment of gout and other disorders caused by excessive production of uric acid. It functions as an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, which is the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine, and xanthine to uric acid. Allopurinol blocks the conversion of these compounds, thereby reducing the formation of uric acid. Allopurinol has been shown to be effective for treating inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. This drug also inhibits nuclear DNA synthesis, antioxidant vitamins (e.g., vitamin E), and brain functions. Allopurinol has been shown to be effective in protecting neurons against oxidative injury that may lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
