Acenocoumarol is a type of coumarin derivative that is used as an anticoagulant. It binds to the active site of the enzyme thrombin and prevents it from converting fibrinogen into fibrin, which is necessary for blood clotting. Acenocoumarol inhibits the activity of other enzymes in the coagulation cascade by blocking their ability to bind to prothrombin or calcium ions. Acenocoumarol has been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for treating metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, and myocardial infarcts. This drug also has a specific antidote that is effective in cases of overdose.
