N-Acetyl mesalazine is a drug that is used to treat ulcerative colitis and other bowel diseases. It has been shown to be clinically effective in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease. N-Acetyl mesalazine inhibits the activity of inflammatory cells, such as macrophages and neutrophils, in the lining of the colon. This inhibition may be due to its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. The bioavailability of N-acetyl mesalazine can be reduced by up to 50% because it is metabolized by colonic bacteria into mesalamine, which has a lower anti-inflammatory effect than N-acetyl mesalazine.
