It is also found in pineal gland and other organs, where it binds to DNA and alters gene expression. N-Acetyl-5-hydroxytryptamine has been shown to bind to response elements in the promoter region of protein genes, which may lead to a significant upregulation of these genes. This compound also has chemiluminescent properties, which can be measured using a cdna clone.
