Alteplase is a recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) that is used for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction. Alteplase belongs to the group of thrombolytic agents and has shown to be effective in restoring blood flow to the heart by breaking down clots. It also increases patency rates on patients who have undergone thrombectomy. The enzyme inhibitors can be classified into two groups: those that inhibit tPA, such as heparin and hirudin, and those that inhibit other enzymes, such as streptokinase. Alteplase is used for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction because it reduces mortality rates when administered within three hours after onset of symptoms. This drug also has been shown to reduce creatine kinase levels in patients with congestive heart failure, but does not improve symptoms.
