It has been shown to react with sodium carbonate and amines in the presence of water to form esters. 2-Acetylbutyrolactone can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. This drug also has the ability to act as a solid catalyst for palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions, which are used in organic synthesis. 2-Acetylbutyrolactone is also capable of forming noncovalent interactions with fatty acids and hydroxyl groups on proteins.
