Acetyltropic acid is an amide which is used in organic synthesis. It is a hydrochloride salt that is soluble in organic solvents. Acetyltropic acid can be acetylated by thionyl chloride and phosphorus pentachloride to form the corresponding ester. This product has been shown to have anticholinergic effects, such as lowering blood pressure. Acetyltropic acid also reacts with phosphorous pentachloride to form the corresponding chloride. The nmr spectra of this product are consistent with the expected structure.
