Adapalene is an organic solvent that can be used as a Grignard reagent. It is also a chromatographic solvent and has a high boiling point. Adapalene is the sodium salt of adapalene, which dissolves in water. The pharmacopeial grade of adapalene is in the form of a white or almost white crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 388.5 and a melting point of 130-132°C. Adapalene has been shown to inhibit the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase, which converts tyrosine to L-DOPA, leading to decreased production of melanin. This process can be catalyzed by magnesium ions or by ligands such as phenols and amines.
