Aflatoxin P2 is a potent carcinogen that belongs to the family of mycotoxins. Aflatoxins are toxic and mutagenic chemicals produced by certain species of Aspergillus molds that grow on grains, nuts, and tree seeds. Aflatoxin P2 is one of the most potent naturally occurring carcinogens known to man. The major route of exposure for humans is through ingestion of aflatoxins-contaminated food or water. Aflatoxins can also be absorbed through the skin from contact with contaminated cotton clothing, wool blankets, or leather goods. Aflatoxin P2 has been shown to affect gene expression in animals and humans by inhibiting DNA synthesis, RNA synthesis, protein synthesis and cell division.
